This week, South Wales Central Member, Joel James MS, joined families and pupils of Tref Y Rhyg Primary School in Tonyrefail to protest RCT Council's proposal to close the school.
If approved, the closure would see pupils from Tref Y Rhyg Primary School move to Tonyrefail Community School by September 2025, with families expected to walk 1.3 miles to the new school a twice a day in all weather conditions, with no safe route.
Speaking after the walk, Joel said:
It was really great to join the pupils of Tref Y Rhyg Primary School and their families today. The lack of forethought from the Council and the impact this decision would have on such a tight-knit community is significant.
To make pupils and their families walk almost 50 minutes each way to and from school is ridiculous and I will be doing everything I can to support the families of Tref Y Rhyg Primary School.
