Senedd Member for South Wales Central, Joel James MS, has today had his amendment passed during Stage 3 of the Elections and Elected Bodies (Wales) Bill.
The Bill looks to bring in a number of electoral changes for elections in Wales.
Speaking outside the Chamber, Joel said:
The Welsh Conservatives have worked hard to hold the Welsh Government to account on a number of these proposals, but I'm delighted that I managed to get an amendment through.
As a community councillor, I'm surprised by the number of town and community council clerks who are also elected politicians. I think this is wrong, and I think this position should be politically neutral.
It's only a small amendment in the grand scheme of things, but it will definitely help to professionalise community and town councils, help to ensure greater scrutiny of their work and give people confidence that they are fair and balanced.
