Joel James MS, alongside Senedd colleague, Natasha Asghar MS have received the record-breaking 20mph petition from Lisa Baker on behalf of Petitioner Mark Baker outside the Welsh Parliament.
Mark, along with nearly 500,000 people are calling for the default 20mph speed limits across Wales to be scrapped.
Welsh Government legislation reducing 30mph speed limits to 20mph has become the single most divisive issue in Wales since devolution in 1999. Joel James MS stated that pedestrian safety is paramount and 20mph should be imposed outside schools and areas with high pedestrian footfall; however, he believes that a default approach is not the answer.
Speaking about the petition and the recent Senedd debate, Joel James MS said:
It was a pleasure back in March to receive the record-breaking petition from Lisa outside the Senedd with my colleague Natasha Asghar MS. Yesterday in the Senedd Chamber, I also proudly took part in the debate to discuss this petition. With the Welsh Government’s prediction that the reduction in the speed limit will cost the Welsh economy as much as £8.9 billion over 30 years, I affirmed my full support to this petition to scrap this 20mph policy.
