Senedd Member Joel James MS announces support for shopworkers during the busiest part of the working year.
Meeting with USDAW, a union that provides advice and representation to workers in many different workplaces, at a drop-in session at the Welsh Parliament, Joel heard how an important campaign has been launched to tackle the rising tide of violence, threats, and abuse against shop workers in Wales.
USDAW’s Freedom from Fear 2022 Survey showed that three-quarters experienced verbal abuse, half were threatened by a customer and 8% were assaulted. Nearly a third (30%) are considering changing their job and over four-in-ten (41%) feel anxious about work, all because of high levels of abuse, threats and violence.
Retail workers in Wales, continue to be impacted by abuse, threats and violence, particularly over the festive season so the campaign continues to ensure shopworkers feel safe in their workplace.
Speaking after the session, Joel said:
It was really great to meet with representatives of the Usdaw Union recently in the Welsh Parliament and learn more about their #freedomfromfear campaign.
Sadly, abuse and violence towards staff in shops is on the rise, and the Christmas period is one of the worst times. This Christmas please don't add to this abuse and do call it out if you see it.
