Commenting on his exchange with the Deputy Minister today on bus provision for the elderly, Welsh Conservative Shadow Minister for Social Partnership Joel James, MS said:
Remaining mobile as we age is extremely important not only for preventing isolation and loneliness but also to help maintain fitness and cognitive function. Free bus passes are a huge positive for older people being able to do this.
However, studies have shown that there are a considerable number of challenges to older people using the bus including an increased likelihood of falling when getting on and off, or when the bus moves before they have found a seat. This leads not only to injury, but to anxiety, fear and a loss of self-confidence when using public transport.
With the current provisions less than adequate I asked the Minister what steps are being taken to work with the Older People’s Commissioner, disability charities and bus operators to reduce the challenges of older people using the bus. As a result of the Minister’s disappointing answer, I am writing to the Old People’s Commissioner to seek support to bring forward change and address the numerous concerns facing our elderly population.
