Commenting on his exchange with the Minister for Social Partnership in the Senedd today, regarding the Labour Government’s pledge to promote Wales as the most LGBTQ-friendly nation in Europe but then failing to challenge regimes with poor human rights records, Welsh Conservative Shadow Minister for Social Partnership, Joel James MS said:
“Today I challenged Labour Ministers on how they can justify supporting countries like Qatar and Uganda, which has just passed some incredibly regressive legislation, effectively banning homosexuality whilst also expressing Wales as Europe’s most LGBTQ friendliest nation.
“Let's not forget that Uganda continues to receive money from the Labour Government through the Wales and Africa programme and the First Minister received paid accommodation from the Qatari Government during the World Cup.
“Labour may say that they challenge these regimes, but conveniently for them, this tends to happen ‘in private’ and out of sight. Despite the Labour Government’s political position on LGBTQ+ issues, they did not commit to stop sending money to Uganda.”
