Joel James MS, Senedd Member for South Wales Central recently visited Maggie’s Cardiff, having a tour of the facilities and meeting key staff who provide free expert care and support to those diagnosed with cancer as well as their friends and family who may also be affected.
Maggie’s enables people to take back control when cancer turns their life upside down, with professional support for anything from treatment side effects to money worries. All of Maggie’s support is free and you don't need an appointment or referral – just pop into a Maggie’s centre which are alongside NHS hospitals, with the Cardiff Centre next door to the Velindre Cancer Centre.
Maggie’s Cardiff have recently celebrated being awarded a £1 million cheque towards the building of their new purpose-built centre thanks to the players of the People's Postcode Lottery. Fundraising is key to enabling staff to help as many patients, friends and family as possible through their free expert services.
Speaking after his visit, Joel said:
It was really great to visit Maggie's Cardiff today, which is next to the Velindre Cancer Centre in Whitchurch. They do such tremendous work in helping people and their families come to terms with a cancer diagnosis - it's such a fantastic facility.
It was also a pleasure to meet Paul Scanlon for the first time. Since his operation last year, he's done so much to raise awareness of Bowel Cancer and he's currently raising money for Maggie's as well.
