Joel James MS, Senedd Member for South Wales Central has visited Barry War Museum and Heritage Centre located within Barry Island Railway Station.
The museum and centre run solely by volunteers showcases different artefacts and displays including a WW1 trench to simulate life on the Western Front, a genuine WW2 Anderson shelter and a 1940s-style kitchen.
The Museum (run by the Barry at War Group) also aims to research, preserve and promote the wartime history of the town and surrounding area.
They aim to support schools and groups researching the local war history of Barry and the surrounding area, by exhibiting at heritage events and holding exhibitions about the topic, to educate the public.
During his visit, Joel also met Graham Underdown, who has been awarded an MBE for his services to charitable fundraising.
Speaking about his visit, Joel said:
It was fantastic to visit the Barry War Museum and Heritage Centre, I can’t believe I had never visited before! It was brilliant to enter the WW1 trench to simulate life on the Western Front and see a genuine WW2 Anderson shelter, I can’t praise enough the volunteers I met with including Alan with his brilliant WW1 knowledge. I highly recommend everyone visit the Barry War Museum and Heritage Centre, including any local school and groups. I’ll definitely be visiting again!
