Joel James MS was welcomed to Age Connects Morgannwg (ACM) head office in Aberdare this week (Monday, 20th February) to understand how the charity supports older people in RCT.
Age Connects Morgannwg is a charity that places the needs and wants of people aged over 50 at the heart of its agenda. Since 1977, ACM has helped thousands of people living in Rhondda Cynon Taf, Bridgend and Merthyr Tydfil. They aim to assist every older resident in these regions across South Wales.
On his visit, Joel met with the charity’s Chairman – Christopher Ward and Bethan Shoemark-Spear – the Strategic Development, Partnership and Policy Manager, where they discussed the recent work of ACM. One example raised was the ‘Vaxi-Taxi’ scheme which helped over 800 people attend their COVID-19 vaccination appointments. Joel was pleased to learn that this scheme has been reinstated for booster vaccinations.
In their meeting, Bethan and Christopher raised concerns and disappointment regarding their funding. Last year, ACM saw their funding decrease by 30% is uncertain that funding levels will be maintained in the next financial year.
As part of his visit, Joel had the opportunity to shadow a support worker and sit in on a welfare benefits support appointment. He was also treated to a tour of the facility, highlighting their new anchor tenants, such as the GP practice. Joel was fascinated to see how the centre is helping to cater for the needs of children and young people by hosting a variety of playgroups and classes for all ages.
Speaking after his visit, Joel said:
“I thoroughly enjoyed returning to ACM today and witnessing their progress and development. The charity is doing some outstanding work to help the elderly in the community. Everyone working here genuinely cares about each individual and is dedicated to doing all they can to help.
I share their frustrations concerning issues with funding. I am disappointed to hear of their potential further budgetary restraints. We must provide the best possible care and support for our elders. Their needs must not be forgotten or cast aside.
I am also very grateful to Fleur for letting me shadow her today. It was a great opportunity to see first-hand just how ACM is helping older people in RCT”.
