On Friday, November 1st, Joel James, MS, visited the staff at Ferndale House to discuss the RCT Council's plans to close the Home for the Elderly.
During the meeting with concerned staff, Joel learned that residents were not informed about the potential closure in person by the Council; instead, a letter was simply pinned to their noticeboards.
He also heard that both residents and their families are anxious about the future, particularly regarding potential costs if they are forced to move to a private care home.
Initially, staff at Ferndale House had been assured that all residents would stay together and move to a newly constructed facility. However, it is now believed that this is no longer the case, and residents may face separation.
Speaking after his visit, Joel said:
It was great to meet with staff of Ferndale House this morning. I'll be doing all that I can to oppose the closure of Ferndale House.
The situation both staff and residents have been faced with is unfair and disappointing by the Council.
