On Wednesday evening (10th May), Joel James, MS for South Wales Central, attended a presentation by the Motor Neurone Disease Association in the Senedd Oriel, where he gained a better understanding of current research and new emerging treatments.
Currently, 5,000 people in the UK live with Motor Neurone Disease (MND), with 200 living in Wales. The disease is incredibly debilitating and can cause symptoms such as muscle weakness, speech, and communication problems, swallowing difficulties and breathing problems. Sadly, MND cannot be stopped or reversed. However, the Motor Neurone Disease Association are hopeful that effective treatments and a cure can be found.
At the presentation, Joel discovered how the charity helps and supports anyone affected by MND to access the resources and support that they need. Whether this is simply chatting with someone, connecting with others, or becoming involved in local support branches. Guest speakers at the event informed Joel of the current research available in Wales and how the field has experienced an unprecedented surge in interest and study in recent years.
Speaking after the event, Joel said:
“I am really grateful to the MND Association for coming to the Senedd tonight and giving such an informative presentation to myself and my fellow Senedd Members. Motor Neurone Disease is such a cruel illness, and it is encouraging to hear of the recent surge of research and interest in the disease.
There is so much ground-breaking research taking place in Wales and everyone involved deserves so much credit. Whilst this event was positive, celebrating the recent uptake in research and therefore hope in the industry, I do hope that there is greater access in the future for clinical trials in Wales.
I do not doubt that effective treatments and a cure will be found in the future.”
