On Tuesday (21st February), Joel James MS joined with National Trust Cymru to plant a plum tree at Tir Y Craig in Tonteg to encourage more people to connect with the nature around them.
The planting is part of National Trust Cymru’s #BlossomWatch #GwleddYGwanwyn campaign that works with communities, elected representatives, and other partners to create spaces that bring people and nature together. It also aims to generate greater reflection on the benefits of nature.
During this activity, Joel had the opportunity to meet with Nia Williams – the Project Coordinator for #BlossomWatch, where he learnt more about the programme and its development since its launch in the 2020 lockdown. In their conversation, Joel and Nia were keen to discuss the history of the land at Tir Y Craig, the wide variety of species that exist there and potential future developments.
Joel was joined by Mike Cooper, Karyl May MSc – Clerk and Executive Officer and Councillor David Stone – Chairman of the Llantwit Fardre Community Council at the event.
Afterwards, Joel said:
“It was great to participate in National Trust Cymru’s #BlossomWatch Campaign this year by planting a plum tree at Tir Y Craig. The project seeks to encourage people to explore the nature that surrounds them.
It was even better to involve Llantwit Fardre Community Council. I am especially thankful to Cllr David Stone for assisting me with the planting.
If the last three years have taught us anything, it is the importance that nature and our natural environment plays in our health and well-being. I hope that local walkers on Tir Y Craig will like the new addition to the site, and I look forward to returning and enjoying the fruits of our labour in a few years!.”
