Commenting on his spokesperson questions in the Senedd today, Shadow Social Partnership Minister, Joel James MS said:
Not only has the pilot gone over budget by £5 million, now totalling more than £25million, there are reports that many young people have been adversely affected by the Basic Income Trial. Today I challenged the Minister on the downsides of the pilot.
The study on the BI pilot must be robust and cannot just cherry pick data that suits the Government’s agenda. If this trial has caused negative consequences for the young vulnerable people, then it must be up to the Welsh Government to correct the consequences that may arise.
Unfortunately, the Minister’s answer provided little clarity, was defensive and did not provide a plan to offer support to those who may be affected negatively by the pilot.
