Commenting on the news that the Labour Government will not be giving care leavers £1,600 a month in basic income when the pilot ends, Welsh Conservative Shadow Social Partnership Minister Joel James MS, said:
I’m not surprised that this scheme has come to an end. It was nothing more than a socialist experiment by Labour designed to generate headlines and nothing more. Care leavers are a vulnerable group and should not have been used in this way.
With Labour’s record on helping care leavers in Wales and the scheme expected to be over budget by £5 million, this money could have been better spent to ensure all care leavers receive the proper support they need.
I can only hope that now Labour’s pet project has ended, the Welsh Government get their act together and deliver the much-needed reform that the care system needs.
