Joel James, MS for South Wales Central, had the joint honour of unveiling a new information board for the Rhondda Tunnel Society in Blaencwm on Saturday.
To complete the reveal of the notice board to the community, fellow Welsh Parliament colleague and Member of the Senedd for Rhondda Cynon Taf – Buffy Williams, joined Joel. The new information board provides a brief history of the tunnel and outlines the main aim of the Rhondda Tunnel Society - to give the tunnel a new lease of life and reopen it as the longest cycle lane in Europe.
The event in Blaencwm was also attended by TV Presenter Martin Roberts, best known for his time fronting BBC’s programme – Homes Under the Hammer. Martin is a patron of the Tunnel Society and has recently helped to inject excitement into the local community by purchasing the Hendrewen Hotel. He plans to turn the hotel into a first-rate gastropub.
Following the event, Joel commented:
“It was brilliant to join the Rhondda Tunnel Society and Martin Roberts today for the unveiling of this information board. I passionately believe that reopening this tunnel would be a fantastic addition to the Rhondda, bringing much-needed investment and tourism. The tunnel provides a real opportunity to connect our communities through green, innovative means.
Both reopening the tunnel and Martin’s new venture would be fantastic assets and represent a significant investment into the upper Rhondda. I am doing all I can to make sure they become realities.”
