To round off the coronation celebrations, on Saturday (6th May), Joel James MS visited the Royal Mint in Llantrisant to view their ‘Coronation Exhibition’.
In celebration of the coronation of His Majesty King Charles III, the Royal Mint created a limited-edition collection of coins. The collection included a 50p coin, £5 coin range as well as a range of larger fine gold and silver coins. The ‘Coronation Exhibition’ displayed the world’s first official crowned coinage portrait of the new King. During his time at the Mint, Joel had a tour of the facility to watch and learn how the United Kingdom’s coins are made.
After he visited the Royal Mint, Joel also stopped by the Coronation Festival which was organised by the family-run, South Wales-based market, and event organiser – Urban Markets and Events. At the festival were many small, local Welsh businesses ranging from hot food vendors, and licensed bars to free face painting.
After striking his coin, Joel said:
“Today is a special day in the history of the United Kingdom with the crowning of a new monarch after 70 years. What better way to celebrate this event than by being one of a limited number able to strike my own coin to commemorate the first British coronation to take place in the 21st century?
I had a wonderful time at the Coronation Festival as well, held by Urban Markets and Events. It was utterly amazing to see so many local Welsh businesses at the Fayre including Eleri’s Welsh cakes and Cardiff Dough & Co.”
