The Welsh Labour Government has only one tune on their tired and, frankly, outdated stereo system: 'It's someone else's fault’. Every week, the Welsh Labour Ministers and backbenchers churn out the same story, that all of the problems in Wales are caused by failures of the UK Government.
Week after week my Welsh Conservative colleagues and I hold Ministers to account, yet every week we listen to the same excuses. This not only misleads the public into thinking that matters are out of the Welsh Government’s control but also highlights how the Labour Government will not take responsibility for the fact that for the last 23 years, they have made every decision in Wales on health, education, agriculture, roads, the economy to name just a few areas.
They often cite a lack of funds as an excuse, yet for every £1 spent by the UK Government on someone in England, the Welsh Government receives £1.20. Welsh Labour are complaining about a £900 million shortfall in this year's budget, yet they continually fund pet projects, prioritising the wrong issues, time after time. They wasted almost £150 million on the feasibility project for the M4 relief road that was never built, £40Million on rolling out a blanket 20mph speed limit that the Welsh Government has predicted with cost the Welsh economy as much as £9 Billion in lost revenue, and now they want to spend another £100Million on 36 more politicians!
If they spent money wisely, they would not be in the state of absolute panic that they are in now and would not have to make these drastic cuts. We all know the priorities in Wales, yet the Welsh Government are clueless and in my mind, we need to see urgent change.
The Welsh Government have a real problem with implementing policy and this distinct lack of action is not only their preferred work ethic but is causing real problems in Wales.
We all want to see Wales prosper and we desperately need new ideas in Wales. I will, as ever, work my hardest to call out the failures of Welsh Labour and challenge their ludicrous policies.
Finally, with this being my last column of 2023, I want to wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
