Last week (Thursday 2nd of February), Joel James MS was thrilled to sponsor his first-ever event at the Welsh Parliament on behalf of The Institute of Export & International Trade (IOE&IT).
The event, held at the historic Pierhead Building in Cardiff, was in aid of the professional membership body officially launching IOE&IT Cymru, the new Welsh arm of the organisation.
The IOE&IT is a leading association dedicated to empowering and supporting UK businesses in growing their international markets and trade. By partnering with the UK Government and now the Welsh Government, the Institute acts as an evangelist for the UK.
In a panel discussion, Director General - Marlo Forgione MIEx and Chairman – Terry Scuoler CBE MIEx spoke in detail about the aims of IOECymru. The Institute is looking to champion Welsh trade and promote exporting opportunities for Welsh businesses. Welsh exports recently exceeded pre-pandemic levels, rising 36% to £19.4bn in the last 12 months however, the Institute is aiming to boost these numbers even further.
Speaking at the event, Joel said:
“The launch of IOECymru today is a significant moment for Welsh enterprises that are crying out for more opportunities to export their products. It is a sign of Wales’ growing importance to the international market. It is brilliant to see the IOE&IT empowering Welsh businesses.
“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed speaking to the executives about the challenges and opportunities that Brexit has presented for Wales and how we have the chance to explore new markets.
“My conversation with Professor Sangeeta Khorana, Chair of the Academic Board was of particular interest as she informed me of the Institute’s plan to help academia and industry come together through the increased use of apprenticeships. I am looking forward to seeing how IOECymru and its policies develop.”
Welsh Secretary David TC Davis also attended the event. The Minister gave a speech outlining how IOE&IT and government are in ‘complete alignment’ about the need to raise awareness about the benefits of exports. In his address, Davis also assured attendees that he is committed to advocating for Welsh businesses internationally.
