Joel James MS, Senedd Member for South Wales Central has today reaffirmed his concerns over the Welsh Government's introduction of the 20mph speed limits during a debate in the Welsh Parliament.
The debate focused on the record-breaking petition with nearly 500,000 signatures, calling on the 20mph introduction to be scrapped and reverted to 30mph.
Joel stated that what struck him the most was how surprised the Welsh Government have been at the level of public anger and resentment there has been regarding the 20 mph roll-out, despite huge public opposition to this policy
As Joel also stated, we all agree, that 20 mph limits need to be set around schools, playgrounds and areas of high pedestrian traffic, like our town centres, but implementing a 20 mph speed limit on roads that do not fit this criteria is unnecessary.
The Member also raised his concerns about the cost of this policy and the implications for our economy. Slowing down travel has a big impact on the ability of people to get to work, to get to school, on businesses dispatching and delivering their goods, and on people being able to access services. Mr James also stated, "The Government has already recognised that this could cost the Welsh economy billions of pounds in the years ahead, yet they're still intent on pushing this policy through."
Speaking outside the Chamber, Joel said:
It was great to take part in the Welsh Parliament debate about the record-breaking 20mph petition that has received nearly 500,000 signatures. The public strength of feeling against this policy is enormous, something this Labour Government wilfully ignored.
The Welsh Government state they will review the 20mph policy, but at a cost of up to £5 million to switch some Welsh roads back from 20 to 30mph, was this policy flawed from the outset?
