Joel James MS, Senedd Member for South Wales Central has met with the Kennel Club at the Welsh Parliament to discuss dog breeding and dog health testing in Wales.
Joel heard how French Bulldogs, Pugs and Bulldogs represent around one in every five dogs, however, some dogs within these breeds are known to have complex, painful and debilitating health issues that cause them to suffer.
The Member also learnt that as demand has risen for these breeds, there has also been a rise in irresponsible breeders seeking to fill this gap, some of whom produce more extreme looking dogs that have a shorter lifespan, are unhealthy, have higher vet bills, and are more at risk of being abandoned by owners.
Speaking about the meeting, Joel said:
It was lovely to meet with The Kennel Club UK at the Welsh Parliament before Christmas to discuss dog breeding and dog health testing in Wales and I'm looking forward to a further meeting with the Kennel Club in the New Year to discuss this further.
Puppy buyers should always look for a breeder that prioritises health – including low-volume home breeders. Please make sure you do your research before you purchase your dog and ensure you are buying from a responsible breeder.
