Senedd Species Champion, Joel James MS, has today questioned the First Minister, Eluned Morgan, on the National Seagrass Action Plan, published by Seagrass Network Cymru earlier this year.
The Member highlighted that the plan identifies "six key objectives aimed at both retaining and expanding our seagrass meadows, which sadly have declined by 92 per cent over the last 100 years".
During his contribution, Joel stated that he noticed that the Welsh Government have not yet endorsed this plan, yet doing so would help Seagrass Network Cymru to pursue their objectives, in particular attracting outside investment.
The Member also highlighted the urgency for the Welsh Government to support the plan given that "delays in supporting this plan will have a big impact, because seagrass projects have to wait for another season before they can scale up their plans as per the new objectives."
Speaking outside the Chamber, Joel said:
As the Welsh Parliament 'Species Champion' for Seagrass, I never miss an opportunity to raise its benefits in the Chamber, and today I questioned the First Minister on the recent action plan by Seagrass Network Cymru, and their desire to tackle seagrass depletion head on.
I must admit, I was absolutely delighted by the Welsh Government's positive response, and look forward to genuine progression on this.
